More centenaries

I've tried 3 times to post this entry, so if this isn't the charmed one, I'm giving up.

Back in April I did a little piece about the various entertainment figures who would have turned 100 had they lived. I figured it was time to update that list as there are quite a few. Some may not be very well known, but these are the people I can recall from my childhood. Many are character players the likes of whom we don't see any more.

Anyway, I'm doing a quick list, instead of the whole enchillada. I may take the time to spotlight a couple of people later.

Back in April, I stopped around the time of actress Bette Davis' big day.

Well, that means I didn't mention:

1.  composer Percy Faith (April 7)

2.  novelist and screenwriter Leo Rosten (April 11)

3.  actress Virginia Cherrill (April 12), best recalled as Charlie Chaplin's leading lady in City Lights

4.  Chaplin's second wife and child bride Lita Grey (April 15)

5.   Russian opera singer Irra Petina (April 18)

6.  jazz musician Lionel Hampton (April 20)

7.  pioneering journalist Edward R. Murrow (April 25)

8.  Oscar nominated actress Eve Arden (April 30)

9.  Academy Award nominated cinematographer Lucien Ballard (May 6)

10.  producer, songwriter and librettist Leonard Sillman (May 9)

11.  Oscar winner James Stewart (May 20) [I sort of thought more would have been done in tribute to him]

12.  Academy Award nominated actor and noted writer Robert Morley (May 26)

13.  Oscar nominated screenwriter Frank S. Nugent (May 27)

14.  composer Harold Rome (also May 27)

15.  novelist and James Bond creator Ian Fleming (May 28)

16.  voice actor Mel Blanc (May 30) -- what would Warner Bros. cartoons have been without him? No Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, etc. etc.

17.  Robert 'Bob' Cummings (June 10)

18.  radio and TV host and voice actor Bud Collyer (June 18)

19.  comic character actress Nedra Volz (also June 18)

20.  songwriter Leroy Anderson (June 29)

21.  Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (July 2)

22.  former U.S. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller (July 8)

23.  "Mr. Television" Milton Berle (July 12)

24.  Lupe Velez (July 18)

25.  screenwriter DeWitt Bodeen (July 25) [Bodeen proved to be a fine writer and film historian in his later years, contributing many articles to the long forgotten but much missed journal Films in Review

26.  character actor Jack Gilford (July 25) [I remember him from a series of Cracker Jack commercials from when I was a toddler.]

27. character actor Ford Rainey (August 8)

28.  gangster Alvin Carpis (August 10)

29.  actor Gene Raymond (August 13) noted for having been married to singer-actress  Jeanette MacDonald

30.  Writer-producer Collier Young (August 19)

31.  novelist M.M. Kaye (August 21)

32.  photographer and occasional filmmaker Henri Cartier-Bresson (August 22)

33.  U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27)

34.  actor Fred MacMurray (August 30)

35.  playwright and screenwriter William Saroyan (August 31)

Near the end of the summer, I'll wrap up the year.
